When I had the beauty shop back in 2003 I saw and treated many women who suffered from it. So on that note here is my answer to your question on What Is Adult Acne and adult acne causes.

Okay first of all we need to look at the largest organ in the body which is the skin. We have the top layer called the Epidermis which is quite thick actually and made of 6 layers, with each layer being a certain thickness too...

I think this is the first step in me answering your question "What is Adult Acne". This way you are getting a bit more background...So below are the Six Layers of the Skin.

what is adult acne

Stratum Germinative

Or Basale which is the bottom layer. Here the skin cells are coloum shaped. In this important layer which is just above the dermis.

This is where you have your hair follicles, erector pili muscles to make the hairs stand on end (goose bumps), oil and sweat glands which lubricate and protect and cool down and heat up the surface area.

Plus of course all your blood cells, lymph cells etc. Now this layer also is responsible for cell division and also pushing half these newly made skin cells up the other layers till eventually the die and shed.

The other half remain where they are, but are also dying and reproducing...then the whole process starts again. it is a massive cell regeneration process.

Stratum Spinosum

Or prickle cell layer, is the next layer, now the newly made cells have now changed shape and became polygonal which means they are changing to a more flattened apperance. Now this is also an important layer as in the formatin of keratin starts.

Stratum Granulosum

Or granular layer as it is sometimes known. Now the cells here lose the nuclei and are 3 to 5 rows of flattened cells. Keratin is starting to form which acts as a waterproofing agent. This is a protein substance which is very strong.

It gives the skin protection and you will see it as hair, nails etc. Interestingly it contains sulphur, ever burnt your hair, or over filed your finger nails, get the burning smell...

Stratum Lucidum

In this layer the cells are dead now but are transparent under the microscope.. You only find this layer on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands, there is no melanin present.

Hence these areas of the body don't tan. It is also is designed to help the body handle friction. And it is also quite a thick layer of dead skin cells.

Stratum Cormeum

This layer has over 25 rows of dead flat cells, which are full of keratin to protect the skin from foreign objects, the sun depending how much melanin you ahve as an induvidual.

The skin is contantly shedding. This is why you need to exfoliate, to get rid of the excess. By doing this you are helping unclog the pores which is an important issue when we are looking at What is Adult Acne about and the help for it.

So this is just a quick run down on the layers of the skin, if you want to research this in more detail Wikipedia has some great information. Okay the skin also has different functions which are:

what is adult acne

Defense

Your skin produces melanin which is different for all of us. This gives it protection against the sun, by producing Vitamin D...

Secretion

Your skin produces sebum which is an oil that keeps the skin waterproof and lubricated and helps to keep out foreign bodies...

Temperature Regulation

This is important to cool and heat the body. So you sweat to cool down and your hairs that cover your body stand on end to help keep you warm...

Excretion

It is so important to remove waste, toxins sweat etc from the body...

Protection

Your skin is great in detecting and removing foreign invaders and it is also there to protect the muscles etc under the skin layers..

Sensory

You have various nerve endings in the dermis which allows you to feel different senastions like, hot, cold, pressure, and pain...

The above takes me back to when I did my training, these are the kind of things I had to learn but in a bit more detail. I have just touched the basics here as I said.

A funny thing happened, when we were learning the layers of the epidemis our teacher told us to remeber the first letter of each word of the folowing phrase which was "Cornish Ladies Grow Smelly Geraniums".

Okay you need to know "What is Adult Acne", well to simplyfy it, it is an over production of Sebum, which is the oil your skin produces to keep it lubricated and waterproof.

To much oil gets excreted through the pore (which also contains hair), this then becomes stretched, then you also have a layer of dead skin, which mixed with the sebum creates a great breeding ground for bacteria to grow in. If you think of it that way.

Acne develops when the hair, sebum and skin cells clump together to form a plug. A bacterium grows in the plug that causes swelling. Then when the plug starts to break down, a pimple grows.

Another thing that I found out which will help answer What is Adult Acne is that research has showed that both men and women of any age and race can get acne although it is generally believed to be a teenage ailment as it is most common in teenagers and adults.

what is adult acne
It is estimated that as much as 80% of the population aged between the age of 11 and 30 will experience some form of acne.

Even those in the older generation, as old as in their fifties(though less common) can suffer from acne. Now one reason I believe to be a common cause for women is to much of the hormones testosterone being produced.

Actually a condition that a lot of women suffer from called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome causes an over production in testosterone, whic also leads to excessive facial hair, really not nice.

I saw a few clients with this and did a lot of Laser Hair Removal Treatmentson them which did work...although it is expensive so some ladies just went with Waxing Hair Removal instead.

Anyway one thing that I have found out when dealing with clients over the years and wondering What is Adult Acne I found out that food was nothing to do with it...

I asked clients and a lot of them had a healthy diet, so I thought well it must be down to the hormone testosterone and perhaps the other reason is stress, lack of confidence etc...

Also it has been found that some medications, particularly some antibiotics can cause spots and using particularly greasy oil-based cosmetics to.
