Welcome to Spray on Sun Tan, with so many companies supplying sunless spray tan who do you choose. I used to offer this service to my clients, so I have tried a few.
I have also over the years tried so many different brands, the first one I tried was St Tropez Spray Tan, it was good, I liked the fact that when you applied it it was a nice dark colour.
At least with that one you could see where you were applying it. That is a big problem a lot of the time especially when you are doing an at home spray tan.
However some spray on tan ranges are really dark when applying them, so if you are using ones like this then you will not want to go outside after you have applied it.
Going to a salon for a spray on tan is easier but more expensive, so it is weighing up what will be best for you with how you have your spray on tan applied.
Now as far as ingredients go perhaps do a patch test first so that you know you won't have a problem with it. We are all different, I over the years have not had anyone come to me with an allergy, but best to be safe.
Below is spray tan basics as far as I have experienced with doing spray on tan on former clients and myself.
Now with spray on tan you need to make sure your skin is in good condition, it is so important otherwise the sunless spray tan will not look good, it will be patchy etc.
So a good exfoliator is Sothys Thalassothys Soft Peeling I used this on clients and myself and really it is very good. So once you have exfoliated a good is to moisturise your skin also and Sothys Hydra-Nourishing Body Lotion is also very very good and this to makes a big difference to the look of your spray on tan.
A bit of advice is to exfoliate and moisturise the day before you are going to do your spray on sun tan or going to a salon. Oh and another thing before I forget is if you want smooth legs and are going to be waxing then do this a few days before hand (3 days) and for shaving the make sure you are gentle on the skin as the razor can be quite abrasive.
I once saw a client who had come to me for the spray on sun tan and when I applied the tan I could see scratch marks from where she had shaved her legs..I showed her and she was shocked, she came back the next day to show me and really there was not much I could do, I applied a bit more but only a tiny bit, so do be careful.
If you are going to go to a salon, most therapists should tell you this, as it is very important and it means the results will be really good. Your spray on sun tan will look great.
You see one of the down sides to the sunless spray tan is it gets everywhere and it shows up any flaws on your skin, it will show up spots, blemishes, freckles etc. If your skin is dry it will look really patchy, not good, infact don't do it, till your skin is in better condition.
So that covers the preparation, so what about the application of the spray on sun tan.
Well first things first, if you are going to a salon to have it applied then you will need to prepare by doing the following:
Wear loose clothing old underwear.
Loose fitting shoes if possible.
No perfume or deodorant.
No jewellery if possible and that is it.
And most importantly do your exfoliation and moisturising the night before.
After the sunless spray tan has been professionally applied then when it is dry you will be able to put your clothes on and go home.
Now every salon is different. I asked client to keep their underwear on, although some women asked if they could take there bra off, which is fine especially if they were wearing backless tops to a party etc.
I also checked to see if clients were shy as some of them are, so the spray on sun tan could be done in stages, doing the top half first. I got the client to have a towel wrapped round the waist whilst doing the upper half.
Most of the time though they didn't bother with the towel when we were doing the legs, because I had them relaxed, but the point is about when the client came for a spray on sun tan I didn't want them to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.
So my advice to you is check out your local salon first, see how they make you feel. Go and get a half body tan done first, this way you can test the water before you go for the plunge and have the full body spray on sun tan.
So that is what you can likely expect to happen with the salon experience. Oh I also forgot to mention some salons have the spray tan booth.
That is a different kettle of fish altogether, a really popular one these days seems to be the Mystic Spray on Tan Machine. A lot of people have talked about it, I have never tried it though.
But the spray tan booth has it's pro's and con's compared to the spray on sun tan that you would do at home. I guess you need to move at the right time with the spray coming out, your body needs to be in the right position. However it is faster than using a spray tan machine or gun.
Below is a video of the Spray tan booth using the Mystic spray on tan.
Now when you are doing the spray on sun tan at home then you will need to find a good one that is natural looking and lasts. My other page has a list that I have used when I did clients.
Really a good quality tan should last 1 - 2 weeks and this will depend on how you look after your skin.
And by this I mean, once you have applied it and given it 24 hours, then you need to moisturise your skin everyday, always be gentle when showering and drying your skin.
One of my former clients broke the record, at the time I was using the LA Tan,( which is really brilliant by the way) normally most people got 2 weeks, one client was carefully looking after hers and got wait for it...4 weeks. I was so pleased and it went to prove I was right.
And a really good tip I forgot to mention was that when the spray on sun tan has been applied and dried have your shower the next day, give it at least a full 12 hours to develop. You will find when you have a shower a residue will come of especially if it is dark going on. This is normal so don't panic.
Now doing your at home spray tan is a challenge especially trying to do the back so if possible have your friend or partner do that bit for you.
When you are doing the rest start at the top first, and make sure you wear gloves initially. When you find the best spray tan it will go on easily, be a great colour etc.
When you get to the arms, take of the gloves and spray on your arms, but be light going over your hands and watch the wrist area, this is a tricky area to do as you want it to look real.
The same with your feet, spray lightly over your toes, be careful with the heels and afterwards when you have done the tan wash your hands, being careful when drying them. You may find the next day you might need to do the fingers again.
A wee tips here is to apply some moisturiser to the wrists and heels before spraying them, this way it will be a lighter application and won't get into the lines and creases of the skin.
Now if you find you have gotten the tan on an area you don't want, then you need to wash it of straight away. And if the next day you see it a bit heavy on areas, then it is difficult to remove the spray tan, there are products to buy.
I am unconvinced with them, I have tried a few and for me they didn't work. Now I found this by chance, I got a soft grit nail file and gently went over the area and it did remove it, but you have to be careful obviously.
Another good tip before I forget is to dry yourself with a hairdryer to make sure your spray on sun tan has dried properly. You will find when it has dried it is a bit sticky. That is fine though.
Below is another video showing you how to apply your at home spray tan.
